Synopsis

Album Description
"French horn, keyboards, and drums can hold infinite possibilities, as this Montreal trio aptly demonstrates. Pietro Amato (Bell Orchestre, occasionally Arcade Fire), Mathieu Charbonneau, and Julien Poissant also juggle dueling melodicas, percussion, and an arsenal of effects to create captivating soundscapes and compositions that unexpectedly flowered into dance beats by the set's conclusion. Can Montreal fit another spellbinding instrumental band inside the city walls? Absolutely." -- Exclaim "Perhaps it's too early for grand proclamations about Torngat but what the hell ... Moody and spirited, this EP contains patient songs, comfortable enough in their own skins to make impressions on their own terms ... a tastefully lush document of mature players allowing songs to find their own path and being rewarded for trusting their instincts." -- Echo Weekly "Torngat are a three-piece who employ French horn, melodion, xylophone, Wurlitzer, analog synth, drums, and trumpet to create music to truly lose yourself in. Nothing is forced, the timing is perfect, and the melodies are complex." -- Ottawa Express "Imagine the most joyous moments of the Rachel's oeuvre fused with the accessibility of Belle & Sebastian's most spellbinding melodies. In terms of the excitement in the room and the amazed response of the crowd, it was everything Godspeed You! Black Emperor used to be, minus the politics and pretense." -- Splendid Torngat is a formidable trio hailing from the fertile and diverse musical community of Montreal. Up until now, the band has enjoyed success in a few key cities, but with You Could Be things are about to change! This is the band's third recording, a follow-up to 2005's stellar La Rouge EP. The band has managed to sell through multiple pressings of its previous two recordings despite the fact that they were self-released, thanks in part to extensive touring. Torngat features the French horn playing of Pietro Amato, who is a member of Belle Orchestre and has toured and recorded extensively with Arcade Fire. Equally central to Torngat's sound are the keyboards and synths of Mathieu Charbonneau, as well as weighty percussion and drumming courtesy of Julien Poissant. The band performs music that could be called post rock, but like sister band Belle Orchestre, Torngat's music is less dark and melancholic than post rock. Instead of doom and gloom, the band delivers uplifting melodies and fantasy-inspired passages--yet still manages to infuse the songs with a certain emotional weight. The music evokes that of Tom Waits or fellow Canadian songsmith Patrick Watson. You Could Be offers twelve instrumental selections that gently take the listener on a whimsical journey. The album was impeccably recorded and mixed, with a distinct '70s feel that is incredibly warm and lush. Torngat will tour heavily in support of this release, and a video is currently in the works.
