CD Reviews

Fun early West Coast sounds

"Tone-Loc had a pretty good run in the late 1980s. Following the smash crossover success of Run-DMC doing Aerosmith's "walk This Way," Loc experimented with funny rap tunes anchored with solid 4/4 guitar riffs. he and his producers were good enough at this to create their own crossovers. I can remember watching full-on rednecks in Barrie, Ontario-- the kind of people who at that time wouldn't have been caught dead anywhere near a rap record-- dancing very enthuisiastically to "Wild Thing."

Loc's production was ultra-smooth and he had lyrical help-- "Funky Cold Medina" and "WIld Thing" are still some of the smartest (and funniest) lyrics in rap, and were penned by none other than Will Smith (the Fresh Prince). On "On Fire," Loc has the funkiest moments in all of hip-hop, with the gliding bass and the model scratching guitar.

This is fun, old-school stuff, with a couple of certified classics, from the OTHER originator of West-Coast G-Funk."
