Synopsis

Album Description
The third installment of Tito Puente's Classic Tico 78 rpm recordings is exhilarating!
Once again, 40 tunes on two CD's, some of them released for the first time. Here you will find Puente performing with his big band, playing some of the hit tunes that he made famous during the Palladium or Mambo, like "Mambo Inn," "Ran Kan Kan," "Philadelphia Mambo," "Mambo Rama," and "Mambo with Me."
This set includes the participation of vocalist Gilberto Monroig. In 1951 Tito Puente was looking for a singer in his orchestra to substitute for singer Vicentico Valdés and Puente offered Monroig the job. Monroig sang for two years with Puente and cut many 78 RPM records. Monroig is best known for the quality of his romantic voice in boleros (ballad), but in this compilation we get to appreciate his vocal versatility. Beyond a handful of boleros, Monroig sings fiery Mambos and Cha-Cha-Cha's such as "Bam Baram Bam" and "The Silver Star." The genius of Tito Puente is evident throughout. Puente's Latin big band sounds like none. He was always experimenting with new material. Good examples are the oriental subtle references in "Confucius Mambo" and the Mambo reconstruction of the Juan Tizol Latin Jazz standard in "Caravan Mambo."
Another historical collector's item from Fania!

CD Reviews

Amazing reissue
El Cubanito "Ed" | 03/08/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Each of these 3 volumes has something good in it. More than a few of the mambos in this series were ones I grew up listening to as a kid. What a pleasure to hear them again in cleaner form than the ones I own (original vinyl). As the othere volumes do, this collection will make your feet start moving! A good buy for someone wanting to familiarize themselves with early "Cuban" music, a must have for collectors. While these are recordings taken from "original" 78's or masters, the feeling of the music still comes through with authority. They have been playing non-stop since I got them. "Que siga la fiesta"!"
