CD Reviews

Everything with an incredible bonus

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Are you wondering why this out-of-print box set is so expensive? Here's the answer: not only do you get all three studio albums (It'll End in Tears, Filigree & Shadow, Blood), you also get a fourth disc with the original versions of many of the songs written by other artists. This is amazing! Anybody who collects music knows how time consuming it can be to identify and track down the originals of covered songs.

This is what's on the "Original Versions" disc:
1. Another Day/Roy Harper
2. Mr. Somewhere/The Apartments
3. With Tomorrow/Gene Clark
4. Holocaust/Big Star
5. Kangaroo/Big Star
6. Carolyn's Song/Rain Parade
7. I Want to Live/Gary Ogan and Bill Lamb
8. Alone (on piano)/Colin Newman
9. Drugs/Talking Heads
10. Help Me Lift You Up/Mary Margaret O'Hara
11. Song to the Siren/Tim Buckley
12. Morning Glory/Tim Buckley
13. I Must Have Been Blind/Tim Buckley
14. Several Times/Pieter Nooten and Michael Brook
15. The Jeweller/Pearls Before Swine
16. I Come and Stand at Every Door/The Bryds
17. I Am the Cosmos/Chris Bell
18. You and Your Sister/Chris Bell
19. 'Til I Gain Control Again/Emmylou Harris
20. Nature's Way/Sprit
21. Strength of Strings/Gene Clark

Truly incredible. There's no better way to get a true feel for an artist's influences. Think of it as an iPod playlist--or if you're old school, like me, a cassette mixtape--made for you by This Mortal Coil.

Bottom line: this is one of the few box sets that is equally valuable for both new listeners and committed fans. The "Original Versions" disc, combined with the three albums, make this an incredible acquisition for anybody who likes This Mortal Coil."
