Synopsis

Album Description
Wailin' tenor sax daddy Johnny Nocturne, a/k/a John Firmin, worked with the David Bromberg Band in the '70s; in the '80s he moved to the San Francisco area and helped pianist Mitch Woods form the Rocket 88's. Now he's moving out on his own with this four-horns-plus-rhythm combo, a band that nails the party spirit of the great jump combos of the late '40s and early '50s--think of Roy Milton or Louis Jordan. With soulful vocals from Brenda Boykin, Firmin's ultra-direct, wailing tenor, and a fat, fat horn section anchored by bari player Danny Bittkar, it sounds like party time in San Francisco.

CD Reviews

Really Fantastic
Steven P | Seattle, WA USA | 05/03/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Heard the track "Baby I'm doing it" (track 4) on the local jazz station. Never in 50+ years have I done this, but I got the stations playlist, and ID'ed this album. Bought the MP3 version, and am loving it. Really, really great jazz/blues music. Brenda Boyken's got a fabulous blues voice, and Nocturne's band is fantastic. No samples are available, so you'll have to risk it. But as the first reviewer said, you wont be disappointed. In fact, if you like good, upbeat jazz/blues and great vocals, you will in fact be delighted. Buy it -- it's only $9.99, and Amazon's downloader will load everything directly into iTunes (at least it did for me on my Mac)."
