THE SUPERB CBS BOULEZ DEBUSSY RECORDINGS REMASTERED
Dub Taylor | Paris, France | 06/08/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It's a shame that this new 2-CD remaster (2006) of the CBS/Columbia recordings of Debussy by Pierre Boulez are only available at this moment as an import in the US. This new incarnation of these 1966 to 1968 recordings with the New Philharmonia and Cleveland Orchestra are in my opinion superior to Boulez's later DG recordings. This version of the "Images pour Orchestre" with the Cleveland Orchestra has never been surpassed by anyone. How can an orchestra from the American Midwest sound so "French"?! His ability to pull out what the composer put into the score while keeping his own ego out of the process is why Boulez is our greatest living conductor, particularly with the repertoire of Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky and Bartok. In this new DSD mastering by Sony/BMG the sound is luminous. It sounds like it was recorded last week, not 40 years ago! Don't pass this one up, even if you have 10 versions of this music in your collection already!"
