Great music -- but on a burned CD-R!
Joe Chellman | Chicago, IL | 06/17/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)
"The music on it is, as other reviewers have said, wonderful and worthwhile. I need say no more on the content of this record than has already been said. I just want to make sure you know what you're buying (I didn't). This CD is not pressed from a master as most CDs you buy are. It's a CD-R that's printed on demand by Amazon themselves. As of this writing, the information appears under Editorial Reviews, but not in any of the product description areas where one might expect.
The print quality is no better than passable on the CD label and artwork, sort of blurry and not cut evenly. The music data seems to be fine, but of course I have to wonder about the longevity of the product, being a burned CD. I've asked Amazon why this information isn't listed in a more sensible, visible place, and whether Bill Stewart is getting a normal (or dare I hope, better than usual) cut of the sales, but I have received nothing but form letters so far.
On music alone, this is at least four or five stars. As a purchased product, it's a two at best. I'll give it a three."
The best jazz CD you've never heard
MT | Princeton, NJ | 04/21/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)
"Bill Stewart is one of the best drummers around--working with Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, etc. This CD received accolades when it came out and top marks in every Jazz Guide I've ever seen and yet it's out-of-print! Do what you can to put your hands on this one. The quintet is terrific. Stewart receives particularly strong accompaniment from pianist Bill Carrothers on this CD. Bill Stewart has played on several Bill Carrothers projects and they've played to rave reviews in Europe. You can check out the CDs "Ghost Ships," "A Band in All Hope," and "Duets" (available on Amazon--the rest you can search for on the net under Bill Carrothers)"

"This is a brilliant record by an outrageously musical band. The whole band kills -- Steve Wilson and Seamus Blake on saxes, Larry Grenadier on bass, Bill Carrothers on piano and Bill Stewart rockin' the drums. Bill Stewart's drumming is so sweet, shapely and tasty it must be heard to be believed."
