Synopsis

Although most of these works have been recorded many times, this program offers a unique opportunity to hear, side by side, the diversity of Tallis's compositions for both the Anglican and Catholic service. Tallis served under four monarchs during his long career, and the music he wrote depended on the sympathies of the current ruler: Protestant (Henry and Edward), Catholic (Mary Tudor), and Protestant, though somewhat tolerant of Latin-texted music (Elizabeth I). Here are many of Tallis's most renowned-- and a few previously unrecorded--works, reflecting the different styles and demands of the more modest English language services versus the long-established and more elaborate music of the Catholic liturgy. Tallis's creative powers enabled him to write music that was efficacious and exceptionally beautiful no matter what the circumstances or limitations. The Theatre of Voices and The King's Noyse, who perform some rarely heard instrumental works, give us exemplary performances enhanced by an agreeably resonant acoustic. --David Vernier

CD Reviews

Stunning, heart rending compositions & performance

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Like others, my first exposure to Tallis' music came through Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Variations On A Theme By Thomas Tallis." The theme on which those variations are based is on this CD (track 14, Third Tune for Archbishop Parker's Psalter), and you will be surprised when you hear the theme sung by the human voice, rather than RVW's strings. It is simply beautiful, and yet also somehow strident. So this CD will be a successful springboard into Tallis' music proper. The Lamentations are beautifully sung, and have so much complexity to them that they will command your attention and then your heart. Other compositions here have a similar effect, but that is not to say that the entire CD is somber. It's never 'merry', but you won't come away depressed. Strong buy."
