CD Reviews

THE BEST CD I HAVE BOUGHT IN A LONG TIME!!!
02/27/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is seriously one of the best I have heard in a long time. From "Suite Pea" all the way to "P.L.U.C.K.", this an energizing audio rollercoaster. This band is political at times, making you think (Rage Against the Machine), while at others, they are more, well, System of a Down-ish, I guess! They are just so original that I never get tired of listening to the CD's sweet tunes. Whether it's frontman Serj Tankian's distinctly original voice, or guitarist Daron Malakian's ultra-fast, ultra-cool riffs and slides, this CD will keep you glued to your stereo. Just one more example of how distinct their sound is; at a friend's house several days ago, he had bought the Dracula 2000 soundtrack, and when he played the S.O.A.D. song, I could tell it was them instantly. Same goes for the cover CD, "Nativity in Black.""
Pleasantly Surprised

"I bought System of a Down thinking that there were going to be no more than 2 good songs on it. I was pleasantly surprised by this CD. I first heard of them when I saw them at a Limp Bizkit concert in Peoria, IL. They were a great show, though they were just an opening band. Every song on the CD is excellent but my favorite is "spiders."Will"
Powerful messages, great originality

"First off, I just wanna say that if you don't like screaming or shouting, you won't enjoy this album. After thoroughly listening to this selftitled debut and the new release known as Toxicity, I have determined that this band has two different sides. On this CD, their lyrics and music are driven basically by worldwide issues. (Examples: religion, politics) Obviously, they are angry by some subjects of their songs and their anger is expressed through Serj Tankian in the form of screaming and shouting. I'm just saying that to clarify that there is a reason for their rage. Now System's other side is expressed on Toxicity. That CD doesn't have nearly as much anger as this debut. It is showing that the band has a soft, melodic side to them that might be more enjoyable to some fans. While the meaning of some songs might be hard to figure out, they are just fun to listen to. An example would be the catchy tune known as "Cubert". And I know the lyrics are explicit but that's just another of the many things you have to cope with when listening. Overall, this is a great album and I can't wait for their third release!"
