This erratic but interesting 1951 live performance fascinates for its sheer energy at climaxes, and quirky, restless tempo shifts, many which are Scherchen's, not Mahler's. Tahra usually provides fabulous remastering, but this transfer sounds muffled compared to the bloom and brightness of the original Columbia Masterworks LP issue, long out of print, of course. --Jed Distler
