CD Reviews

Precise, Powerful & Clear
Charles Andersen | Anaheim, CA USA | 05/18/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Always the master of details, there are no round edges is this masterful rendition of both these symphonies. The articulations are precise and the tempi are perfect. Levine brings out the best in this wonderful orchestra in interpreting these favorites. The almost vocal lyricism in the Adagio of the Third Symphony is elegant beyond praise, while the Presto of the finale to the Fourth really pushes the tempo without ever losing clarity. It is a rousing rendition of the Fourth. I highly recommend this CD."
A (re)match for Karajan's classic Mendelssohn pairing
Santa Fe Listener | Santa Fe, NM USA | 01/15/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In 1988 when Levine made this recording, the Berlin Phil. had just ruptured all ties with Karajan, who had made a great Mendelssohn pairing of the Third and Fourth Sym. in the Seventies. So DG was competing with itself here. The digital sound of Levine's performance is cleaner and more detailed than Karajan's analog version, but the difference isn't acute.

Levine's apaproach is leaner, a bit more yielding, not as grand-scaled as Karajan's. But if anything it's more briiliant and scintillating. The two recordings don't cancel each other out. If you want superb musicianship from a large virtuoso orchestra, either CD is great. I only prefer Levine because he brings out Mendelssohn's uniqueness -- these two symphonies are rapturous outpourings on the order of Schumann's symphonies and should not be reduced to replications of classical purity, however much the composer owed to Mozart and Haydn . Levine makes them dazzling and light.

P.S. Dec. 2009 -- In the current issue of the Gramophone the reviewer trashes Levine, Bernstein, and Karajan in the Scottish Sym. so that he can extol the HIP puniness of Norrington and the finicky Harnoncourt. So be it. Tastes change, which means that it can also decline. All three are superlative, exciting performances."
