CD Reviews

The piano band takes it further with their best lyrics ever

"With the flood of music on the Christian market today, it's hard to find a song that just grabs you lyrically and holds onto you. You know the song I'm talking about: that one that forces you stop whatever you're doing and listen because it seems like it was written from your own life. Suddenly, it seems like someone else has truly been listening to you.

Today is the latest release from The Swift, and it holds the distinction for me of having a song just like that. I've never been one to enjoy piano-based rock, but the music here is good. The CD opens with "You Burn", which is a song that could easily be played in any contemporary worship service (we play it in our youth worship services). It has a catchy piano riff that immediately reminds you of Bruce Hornsby and the Range. Good stuff! If the other rockers on this CD had sounded similar, it would have been perfect. The lyrics are great!

"Alive In Love" and "Now That You've Found Me" are two more great songs that could find their way into your church service (if your worship leader was really cool). "Now That You've Found Me" has a slight Coldplay feel to it, which is a big plus. Wish they'd gone that route a little more often. "Alive In Love" has some great lyrics too.

The crown jewel of this collection is "I Need You". It's the song that stopped me when I first heard it, and it demanded a second listen. The lyrics of this song are so powerful, it won't leave you alone.

My heart is restless in me, My wings are all worn out

I'm walking in the wilderness, and I cannot get out

I need You, Oh I need You, Blessed Savior come

I need You, Oh I need You, Fill the every longing of my soul

I could actually reprint the entire song and point to every line as perfect, but I'll leave that for you when you buy the CD.

"So Amazing" is also a great worship-type song. When these guys are on, they're on strong. You can't complain about the vocals here either. Harmonies are tight, and the lead vocals convey emotion with every song.

Unfortunately, the song selection has its weak points too. "Today", "Unbelievable", "Anthem" and "Revolution" all sound like something Billy Joel would have written in the mid-80's. If you're into that sort of thing, you couldn't ask for better. If you're not a big fan, you'll be skipping those.

All in all, roughly half the songs on this CD could have been released in a worship collection. The lyrics of those songs grab you and truly reach to God. The rest sound like a pop collection with thin lyrics. It's almost like two different bands were involved. Still, I'd recommend Today simply on the merit of the strong songs.

"Every note, word, and breath on this cd is beautiful and so holy. There are upbeat and modern sounding songs and there are lush, moving slow songs. My favorite song is I need you and I also love Now that you've found me and Revolution. I am so glad I have discovered this band and can now share their music with others who need the Lord."

"Wow. I bought The Swift's first album and was blown away with every song, and they've outdone themselves. Their music is so uplifting and is great to listen to. My favorites on the CD are "You Burn", "Today", and "I Need You". Each song is so genuine. This album is amazing and so enjoyable to listen to. I definitely recommend it."
