MEMORABLE MUSIC TO LAST 1000 NIGHTS ...
Alan W. Petrucelli | THE ENTERTAINMENT REPORT (ALAN W. PETRUCELLI) | 05/22/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This Chopin compilation shows off some of his most popular works as interpreted by some of the most distinguished conductors and pianists of today. Billed somewhat embarrassingly as "Chopin's Greatest Hits", it does presents original versions of music adapted in motion pictures such as "The Pianist," "Shine" and "The Piano." The great variety of Chopin's genius, from nocturnes and waltzes to mazurkas and a polonaise, is very much in evidence. The artists on the CD are culled from the great concert halls of today. Claudio Arrau opens with two exquisite nocturnes, and later the virtuosity of Vladimir Ashkenazy shines through with a mazurka and Polonaise. The lush and luxuriant music created by Chopin has never been equaled, and listening to this disc is reminiscent of a thousand nights and a thousand Hollywood movies. When asked how he was able to write music to order for the studios, Oscar Levant replied, "It takes a lot out of you. But it takes more out of Beethoven, Brahms and Bach." And film composers from the beginning of sound have takes a lot out of Chopin. --- Contributed by Staff Member Stephen J. Finn"
