CD Reviews

Suicide Note - You're Not Looking So Good.
Cole Harper | Gainesville, FL USA | 01/23/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"With the abundance of "mosh metal" or "metal core" in the hardcore underground nowadays, it's a relief Suicide Note are around to spread the gospel of good old rock and roll. This release spits in modern hardcore's face while circumnavigating so many of the cookie cutter chugga chugga acts that pollute the air with their typicality. Loosely distorted guitars provided by J. Golday are as technically signficant as they are powerful mesh with Gagovski's furious, but to the point, drumming, creating the heart attack rhythms that set the framework for this killing machine. All the while, Peele's solid bass playing holds the monster in place while the maniacal versitility of Donley's vocals scratches out it's eyes. This is where the future of hardcore punk rock should be. With 10 songs clocking in just over 30 minutes, "You're Not Looking So Good" will ride you dry and put you away wet. The Production (courtesy of Converge's Kurt Ballou) is unique in the fact that it's very spacious, but retains a very tight and focused quality. Standout tracks include "Random Hell," and "Reno and Blood" while "Gag Reflex" and "Segue to the Sun" will satisfy the heartiest hesher's appitite for heaviness. Comparisons are futile with describing Suicide Note, but if I had to come up with names I'd say there's some comparisons to parts of Black Flag, Drive Like Jehu, Botch, Mid-era Cave In, and dare I say, Converge. Suicide Note are not and will never be the "next big thing," however, they certainly are the best thing to come out of "hardcore" since Deadguy. Listen to this and get your mind blown by the furious sophistication of Sucide Note's music, and you just might miss that wagon carrying all those typical hardcore bands. Either way, these guys will still hate you."

"... I can't include this record in hardcore...it's just way too imaginative and exciting to be placed next to American Nightmare or Poison the Well. No, this band should deserve a place in the upper echelons of punk music. They deserve to sit next to converge, and just down the line from Black Flag and Husker Du. I guess that deserving and recieving are two totally different things, but if you want to grab a piece of punk history while it is still relevant get this cd."
