Mel Torme's 1950s collaborations with West Coast arranger-pianist Marty Paich cemented his stature as an uncompromising jazz vocalist. The synergy between the two is comparable to Frank Sinatra's work with Nelson Riddle. Torme and Paich reunited in the late 1980s for two Concord albums: one a studio set, the other recorded live in Tokyo and mixing Torme and Paich favorites ("Too Close for Comfort") with pop, Latin, and jazz standards. Torme's sole misses are studio-recorded renditions of Donald Fagen's "The Goodbye Look" and "Walk Between the Raindrops." By eschewing Fagen's sardonic humor, the performances sound merely lounge-like. The concert's opening instrumental, a Basie-esque "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" underscores the rhythmic punch that always balanced Paich's California cool. With both men gone, it's fortunate Concord captured their reunion so completely. It also leaves a sense of regret that the pair didn't explore the magic a while longer while they were able. --Rich Kienzle

Torme and Paich Magic
Glen Gaskill | Canberra, ACT Australia | 05/21/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A magic double album bringing together Marty Paich and Mel Torme live and in a studio recording in 1988. This is 32 years since they recorded the wonderful "Sings Fred Astaire" and 28 years since "Swings Schubert Alley", an album that still raises the hair on my neck. The musical compatability between the two appears to have been enhanced by the time apart. Obviously reprising some of their earlier cpllaborations but extending them and adding some new touches. The studio set includes a couple of Donald Fagen songs that really suit Mel's delivery and a layered treatment of Chick Corea's Spain. The inclusion of Sweet Georgia Brown and Bossa Nova Pot Pouri on both CDs demonstrates the increased sparks that Mel generated in live performance.Paich uses Mel's voice as an additional band instrument and Torme adds his arranging skills as a full partner.Hearing the two albums together helps you to understand the true musical genius of the pairing."
