When we think about 1920s Broadway musicals now, what comes to mind are frothy Gershwin tunes and a little something called Show Boat perhaps. But the 1920s were also the golden age of the operetta on the Great White Way, and most of them were written by Mitteleuropean men such as the Hungarian-born Sigmund Romberg. So don't expect wild swing in Romberg's The Student Prince (which opened in 1924 as The Student Prince of Heidelberg). The music has more in common with The Merry Widow than with jazz-age follies. This 1952 recording (the first of the complete score) stars City Opera's Robert Rounseville in the title role and the Metropolitan Opera's Dorothy Kirsten as his love interest, a waitress named Kathie. Romberg's ambitious score has a lovely sweep and displays plenty of romantic panache (check out the Finale of Act 2 for a brilliant example of Romberg's melodic skills). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Deep in My Heart are the tunes of Romberg's The Student Prin

"Beautiful voices and full orchestration captured the beauty of this classic operetta in 1952. This bittersweet story includes the wonderful "Drinking Song" and "Student Life" with the students and the soaring duets of the lovers, Kathie and the Prince, including "Deep in My Heart" and "Just We Two". I have always loved this operetta and this is a very good version. Bravo!"
O.K. version.

"I was excited about hearing this version of "The Student Prince", being a fan of both Robert Rounseville and his excellent interpretation of "The Tales of Hoffmann" in the great film of Powell and Pressburger, and Dorothy Kirsten, a stalwart of the old Met Opera. It was just O.K. Her voice did not seem right for the part and his was good throughout, but not in the same way as in his film. The whole thing seemed a bit thrown together. While it's worth hearing, I must say it's one of the few times the movie version superceded the studio version."

"Takes too long to wait for this era of showtunes to be released, but it is still worth it. ..Jag"
