CD Reviews

Great collection for new and old fans

"The first suspicions of any long time SYL fan are that this is Century Media's way to go around the band and make a last buck off of them, but after getting this package, I will say that is not entirely the case. This best of collection spans the entire career of SYL with a nice selection of cuts from all over.

Sure, you probably have all of SYL's records, but this comes with some real good bonuses, like a huge booklet with band comments on each song (as they've done with the re-issues) that are very insightful and humorous at times. The DVD portion features an entire concert from Download 06, as well as numerous live performances throughout the years. It also features promotional videos including the brand new video for "Almost Again" which is pretty cool.

If you've never experienced SYL, this is a GREAT place to start. This cd is pretty much like their live set lists. This is a great band, and it stinks that this is the final chapter in their career."
Plenty for new and old fans alike

"Now that mad scientist of metal Devin Townsend has put Strapping Young Lad on ice, the time is ripe for a comprehensive best-of collection like Chaos Years: 1994-2006. The disc includes a pair of songs from the band's 1995 debut Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing, 4 songs from 1997's City, 3 from 2003's SYL, 4 from 2005's Alien, 3 from 2006's The New Black, and the bonus track "Satan's Ice Cream Truck" from the 2006 reissue of Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing. That's 17 tracks of absolutely insane, unclassifiable heavy metal that will make your ears bleed. Actually, I don't think it's too farfetched to compare Chaos Years: 1994-2006 to an overdose of a particularly potent drug. You may think you can handle it, but pretty soon you realize just what you've taken on.

While the main audio disc is an ideal starting point for newcomers to the SYL sound, it doesn't really offer anything to long time fans that already have the band's back catalogue. Fortunately Chaos Years: 1994-2006 comes with a bonus DVD with enough concert footage, video clips and behind the scenes material to keep the die-hards happy. Honestly, there's enough footage on the DVD that it could have been released in its own right.

Whether you're new to the band or have been following them for years, Chaos Years: 1995-2006 has plenty to offer. Just don't expect to come out the other side with your sanity intact!

"This collection is SYL's best songs, the songs on here that are from the Heavy As A Really HEAY Thing, album are re-masterd so the quality is Much better.

The DVD has all of there Music videos, and a entire live show recorded at the Download festival and a few other live performances thrown is as well. This is great for the metal head who is just getting into SYL, or the fan of Devin Townsend who wants to see what he use to do."
