""South of Stephen" is my introduction to Stephen Kellogg's music. I see that he has about five different CDs out; so he's obviously done well enough to keep recording after this set from 2000. This CD is pretty good. Kellogg has a pleasing voice on this folk-flavored disc. The strongest track is the opener. "Southern State of Mind" has a good beat and a midtempo full-band arrangement. Kellogg's vocals are wistful, "Until I cross Montgomery & I lose my sense of time; Just for a second I forget it all; I make my way across the next state line." "Fading In" is a good rocker. Much of the other material has strong lyrics but suffers from melodies that are not overly memorable. "South of Stephen" is an interesting introduction to this artist and shows promise. Enjoy!"
