CD Reviews

Ignore that other guy's review...
09/27/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"1 Star?! That's all that other guy gave this album in his review. Seeing that made me have to review this album, even though I don't have an account set up and as such am forced to do a "kid's review." That and the statement that he prefers more older oriented artists like Good Charlotte...lol. Anyway, this album is a solid sophimore release from SR-71. Their first album was largely overlooked other than the radio hit "Right Now," so managing a second release is somewhat of a feat in itself. Lacing it with several great tracks is just that much more impressive. Unfortunately, this album came out around the time that pop-punk was taking off and so was overlooked as being yet another album riding that wave. That's a real shame as this album really does offer something extra from that whole genre. What makes this album so good is that the band members are rockers at heart. That might sound strange or maybe even that the album will be off because of it, but that couldn't be further from the truth. What you get is instead of the simple/repetitive/throw away melodies of your typical carbon copy pop punk band, you get driving, harder edged, catchy guitar work instead. And for the most part that really succeeds. What you get is a solid album with several spectacular tracks (Goodbye, My World, They All Fall Down among others), and many more good ones. I'll be the first to say that this album is not perfect, as there are a few throw away songs (hence the 4 star rating). But to find a cd with 5 or 6 great tracks that stay in your head, many other tracks that are good enough in their own right, and only a few (we're talking maybe 2) throw away ones easily warrants a purchase in my opinion. While this is the import of the Japanese release and as such is more expensive, it does include a previously unreleased song in the form of "My World" done acoustically. The original of this track is one of my favourites on the album to begin with as it shows off the writing and melodic potential of the band, but the acoustic version is that much better. It allows the band to more completely explore the creativity that they first showed in the original version and easily steals the show as the premier track on this release. Give this album a try and you won't be disappointed."
