Synopsis

Amazon.com
After two albums spent tweaking their 25-year-old sound, Spyro Gyra lands straight in the smooth-jazz pocket. The ever so slightly adventurous nature of In Modern Times and Original Cinema has been purged and replaced by their usual modus operandi--attractive light melodies over consistent grooves, a fact that is immediately addressed on the first two tracks as well as "Soburg Sam" and "Chippewa Street." Guitarist Julio Fernandez continues to emerge as a prominent voice with sparkling, soaring solos and strong compositions like "Eastlake Shuffle" and "The Crossing," the latter of which features his haunting wordless vocals. As usual, group founder Jay Beckenstein dominates on sax, but what the experimentation of the earlier releases has wrought is a freshness of ideas that allows the band to stay accessible without sounding like they're still trying to recycle their past. --Mark Ruffin

CD Reviews

Great Contemporary Sounds!!!!

"This is the new release from Spyro Gyra. The most current cd by this wonderful group at the time of this writing. (August 3, 2004) And what a release it was. As soon as I bought this cd, I immeadiately found myself humming the songs on this cd. There are some good things also about this cd. Like the appearence of old time Spyro Gyra member, Dave Samuels, appears on several songs, on the vibes. The new drummer, Ludwig Afonso as well as their old drummer, Joel Rosenblatt appear here. Also, drummer Billy Kilson plays on some tracks. Some interesting musicians appear here like a trumpeter and several percussionists. Some highlights are Summer Flying, Monsoon, Wiggle Room, and Chippewa Street. If you haven't bought this cd yet, for god sakes, get it! You wont be dissapointed."
A contemporary jazz reference

"Spyro Gyra has managed to produce a very beautiful, creative and powerful album in "Deep End". The music has great groves, beautiful mellodies, skillfull instrumentation, inspired guitar and sax solos and the power of putting it all together in such a way that its energy really lifts your spirit up.

Spyro Gyra's "Deep End" is great music to listen to or to use as an elegant background for your activities. Please do not confuse this great band and its meaningful music with the many bland and boring artists that are smooth jazz wannabies. This is great contemporary jazz -- it comes across smooth, but in this case that is not by any means a way to hide mediocre musicmanship.

If you would like to try a few tracks I recommend you listen to Monsoon and The Crossing, both will give you a great idea of what to expect here. Enjoy."

"I can and will recommend this cd to two groups of people. One all the Spyro Gyra fans and secondly to audiophiles like me who have invested huge sums of money in the Super audio mulitichannel surround System. This cd sounds absolutely amazing and the album itself is one of their very best."
