CD Reviews

Sophie Tucker "Live"
James Stettler | Los Angeles, California United States | 04/13/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For whatever reason, Mercury Records chose to approximate a live recording rather than just release a recording of one of Sophie Tucker's shows from the Chez Paree or the Latin Quarter. However this release is a must have for Tucker fans. She sings "Nobody Loves A Fat Girl" a song from the 1920s that she had not previously recorded as well as a great version of "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry" a song that was played years later at her funeral. Sepia has given the listener some bonus cuts from another Mercury LP as well as a genuine live performance from 1957 of Soph croaking her anthem "Some Of These Days" at a tribute to Jimmy Durante. This is not the greatest version you will ever hear but it is rare and definitive because it is Tucker performing her theme song. There is also an Edison cylinder recording of "Some Of These Days" that may or may not be an alternate version of one released on the Archeophone label. The timing is certainly different on Sepia's version.

Sepia provides great visuals in their CD booklet with candid photos and colorful ads from Sophie Tucker's UK appearances. There are two sets of excellent notes by Al Koenig Jr. and Alan Eichler that are informative and project specific. Thanks to Sepia for another wonderful CD. They do a terrific job."
