Sonics Today
Jerry Roslie | Tacoma, Wa USA | 11/07/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"It's great to see loyal fans from different parts of the country interested in the Sonics after all these years. I'll be sure and tell Dad since he doesn't have a computer, or use for one, they "didn't need that stuff in the 60's"."
Not the first place to start your Sonics collection

""Maintaining My Cool" actually contains most of The Sonics' lone album for Jerden records, "Introducing The Sonics" minus a couple of cuts that Jerden later put out on their "Fire & Ice: Lost Tapes" collection. Actually, it's not bad, decent mid 60's garage rock, but by the time they recorded for Jerden, The Sonics had lost some of the manic punk rawness that makes their Etiquette Records recordings so essential. In fact, the two leased Etiquette tracks, the immortal "The Witch" and "Psycho" make the rest of the disc sound weak and pale, and Gerry Roslie's demonic Little Richard inspired vocals are reduced to a mere sneer here.. Still, "You've Got Your Head On Backwards" and "Maintaining My Cool" are fun garage rock songs worth hearing. Just make sure you've heard "Here Are The Sonics" and "Boom" first."
It's better than these guys say!

"i just wanted to say that while this CD is in no way as great as the first 2 sonics albums, it's not as bad as these other reviewers say it is.

yeah, some of the songs are dumb, and yeah, it's not as raw, but this is still a solid CD to have if you love the sonics.

hell, i like the song 'dirty old man'!
