CD Reviews

DISMAL mastering of a great recording...
D. M. Press | 12/09/2009
(2 out of 5 stars)

"It hurts to give this release 2 stars. I'll let the others speak of the great music, especially the debut LP "Snail". I comment here on the disastrous mastering. If any of you have ever ripped an LP to CD using Audacity and added too much Noise Reduction and heard the echoy, tinny result (especially as the song fades out) that's exactly what we have here. I am 90% certain the "masters" are LPs. Too bad because these recordings deserve better. I always thought my original LP on Cream records was one of the best sounding recordings I'd heard - especially impressive for a small label. Anyway, surely DO get this CD but be warned - it could have been sonically a "10" instead it's sonically a "6"."
Great Santa Cruz Rock
R. Lugone | Colbert, WA USA | 08/07/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Snail was one of the best local bands in the Santa Cruz / San Jose area. This CD release documents their two great albums from 30 years ago. Ken Kraft and Bob O'Neill were magical together. Their live performances lit up clubs like The Catalyst, The Crow's Nest, The Bodega, The Wooden Nickel and many more. You can also hear Bob on his solo CD "Bob O'Neill" and on "Snailhead". This CD is a must have for all the old fans."
I GREW UP GOING TO SEE THEM LIVE
P. Mata | Hollywood, Ca. | 01/30/2010
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Where's their awesome live classic "Without You"? I witnessed them live every time they performed that song in Santa Cruz & in the surrounding clubs within the Monterey Peninsula back in 1969-1972. They were 1 of the most powerful loud kickass bands that I have ever seen. To this day I still can see them in my head & I have shared their legacy with many who were not there. Does any of the remaining original band members have any live bootlegs of their line up before they got signed to Capitol Records & added the 'songwriter' who ruined their original almost English Rock-sounding era? They so8nded too countrified to me later on.

But, I still will always remember their shows at The Catalyst!"
