Synopsis

Updated in stereo for this 1999 reissue, these Christmas cuts come mainly from 1963, with two Tamla album selections from '68 and '70 added. This Motown superstar's Christmas album is really a showcase for Robinson's timeless voice. Warm and romantic, Smokey Robinson is a consummate singer, a pharaoh of the falsetto and alto ranges who owns one of the 1960s' truly golden throats; when he sings all the other Miracles seem to fade into the mix. Robinson's lyrically rich version of the Stevie Wonder-penned "It's Christmas Time" highlights a 16-song collection of familiar seasonal fare and public-service greetings. Boomers who remember this from their lives as kids may want to share it with their children or their children's children, if only to commemorate the singing genius of that other Mr. Robinson. --Martin Keller

CD Reviews

Smokey At His Very Best
Brian Henley | Hamilton Ontario Canada | 12/03/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Not only is this an excellent Christmas album, with very strong Christian overtones, it is also a collection of some of Smokey Robinson's finest vocal performances. The sound of both the earlier and the latter albums, which were combined for this reissue, is remarkably clean and yet warm. Add in a thoughful packaging effort and you have one of the best Christmas releases of the season."
