Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
Emotionally over-the-top pop extravaganzas like the string-swelling "Tonight Tonight," the Metallica-influenced alternative rock of "Zero," the techno via new wave of "1979"--the 28 songs on this swell two-disc album are as eclectic as their themes are epic and ambitious. Billy Corgan's thin whine isn't much of an instrument, but he makes the most of it by writing smart songs that take emotional chances that more-typical alt rockers would deem uncool. Pessimistic and feeling trapped but still wanting to believe in love, in a future, in something--this is the sound of Gen X at the millennium, with all the self-indulgence and power that would suggest. --David Cantwell

The Best Smashing Pumpkins Album
Brendan Flood | Indianapolis, IN United States | 01/30/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've long been a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins, dating back to their Siamese Dream album and before. I liked how they can blend harder rock songs with other more subdued works. When this album came out it quickly found its way into almost non-stop rotation in my listening queue. This album was the greatest example of what made the Smashing Pumpkins spectacular. I am writing this review many years after its release and after many hundreds of listenings and I still find it great. It combines rock songs like 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' and 'Zero' with softer sounds to make a terrific collection. Having two full CDs of music gives you plenty to listen to. About the only bad thing I can say about this album is that it was unfortunate that the Smashing Pumpkins brought out in the middle of their career because each follow-up album seemed to pale in comparison to this one in my mind.

If you are a fan of alternative you have almost undoubtedly already listen to this album and formed an opinion on it. If you are new to the Smashing Pumpkins or 90s alternative, this is one of the greatest examples of the genre and the band. Do yourself a favor and pick this album up if you haven't ever listened to it and you'll enjoy it."
