Synopsis

Album Description
Stripped down and funky beyond words, 1973's Fresh is quite simply the last great album by Sly & the Family Stone. Funkadelic guru George Clinton, a man who knows something about genre cross-wiring, tabbed Fresh as one of his all-time favorites and convinced the Red Hot Chili Peppers to cut "If It Were Left Up To Me" for their 1985 Clinton-produced LP Freaky Styley. Jazz icon Miles Davis reportedly sat his band down to soak up inspiration from multiple playings of Fresh, a work ranked #186 in Rolling Stone's top 500 rock albums of all time. "If You Want Me To Stay," "Frisky" and "If It Were Left Up To Me" all got plenty of airplay and chart action, the last of Sly's works to score such treatment. Following the almost-scary political manifesto of 1971's There's A Riot Goin' On, Fresh seems particularly, well, fresh! And a little nasty too!

CLASSIC funky R & B
Howlinw | California, USA | 11/17/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Musical genres are often hard to define, so I'm not sure whether to call this a funk album, or funky R&B, or just R&B, or what. But whatever it is, this man and his band basically invented the funk right here and nothing I have heard has topped it. That's right-- this is the best funk/R&B album I have ever experienced. The fluid basslines, punchy horn charts, and Sly's off-the-wall upbeat singing and crazy persona meld into the perfect combination. Unlike Sly's earlier work, which often sounds dated to me now ("Stand!," for example), this disc is timeless. You can also hear the influence on other artists. "Skin I'm In," for example, sounds like a blueprint for the whole Jamiroquai sound. And those funky basslines showed up in Miles Davis's music of the time as well, supporting his fusion of funk-rock and jazz. My wish is that R&B would return to this kind of loose, bouncy excitement rather than the smooth, synthesized crap you hear on the radio these days. This disc is for those who want to know where their funk came from."
If It Were Left Up To Sly.....

"When I first baught this CD (on my father's recommendation)

the late date put me off-1973 and NO Larry Graham? The Family Stone without Larry Graham seemed like a miserable proposition.

But boy is my face red-'Fresh' is probably my all time favorite Sly related album ever. The production is sooooo cool and stripped down-little more then organ and guitar, with a horn or two thrown in.It's basic, classic funk every bit in the Sly tradition and DEEEEEEEP!!"In Time","If You Want Me To Stay",

"Keep On Dancin'" and 'Babies Makin Babies" all are locked deep into that groove.Without Graham Sly's organ flies right up to the center. The final song though,a cover of "Que Sera,Sera" is taken from the Doris Day standard to a mammoth, unrecognizable funk/gospel classic-full of remourse and deep emmotion. So not only is this an all time funk classic but arguably Sly's best album ever!"
