CD Reviews

Just like the old days

(4 out of 5 stars)

"With all these superficial bands like Good Charlotte and Yellowcard leading today's youth and being hailed as "punk" bands, it's extremely refreshing to sit back and listen to the Sex Pistols again. Although the songs are polished and professional-sounding, there is a definite humourous undertone to the entire disc. The band members can be heard trading quips between songs, and audience noise leaks into the microphones so that you can always hear cheers and laughter below the music. But by far, the high point of the CD is track 14. Johnny Rotten starts off "Problems," and within seconds, his microphone produces some atrocious feedback, prompting jeers and mocking laughter from the audience. Rotten and the rest of the band employ a few distraction techniques so that the rest of the show gets on quickly, but it's nice to hear a bit of unprofessionalism in a show that was otherwise almost flawless. This is the perfect album for anyone new to the punk genre, and also for Pistols fans eager to catch the spirit of the early punk shows."
