If Rob, in Hornsby?s High Fidelity, had a copy of Sex and Reverb, it?d be the album he?d play in store, inevitably selling copies while it played. It?d be on at least one or two of his top five lists. It would rank in a mix tape. Maybe it?s because Sex and Reverb?s first CD is about songs. While Coldplay strives for the creation of an album, undivided in its musical message, Sex and Reverb delivers a string of gems, each unique and sparkling, each an album unto itself. It?s as if the ghost of The Archies got serious, channeled The Beatles? eloquence in various turns, and came out with a neo-pop endeavor. The album?s opening Live Wire, needs?in fact, absolutely must, at some point begs?a multitude of listens, infectious as it is. The cut is all bounce, chant and pure melody. Sing along if you have to. It?s all about that innocent crush you had, the song that played on AM radio, that little black, vinyl single you found unexpectedly, packed with power. And then more twists: the Rubber Soul-era style Running With Scissors, melancholy, familiar and fresh, all bound up in a waltz-tempo, pop infused melody; the freely flowing and upbeat Remain Lucid, an acoustic blending infused with bubblegum guitar riffs.
