Synopsis

Since Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos need so much personality from their performers, the obscure pianists who wind up on bargain labels usually can't do the job convincingly. Bernd Glemser may not be Artur Rubinstein or Alexis Weissenberg yet, but he's got both the personality and the piano power to do justice to these much-loved showpieces. Although he doesn't stop to smell too many roses along the way, Glemser does have the flexibility and sense of phrasing to keep these big Concertos firmly in the Romantic era, and he makes some tremendous climaxes. Wit and the fine Polish orchestra are with the soloist all the way, and even the recorded sound is outstanding. -- Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

An brilliant and technically perfect performance
Mr. Seo | 12/26/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The perfomance not only showed his ability as a great soloist, but its also demonstrated his ability to handle a large scale ochestral work where the ability of co-ordinating with ochestra is essential. personally, he can play just as good as Horowitz and ashkenazy can!"
It is an understatement to say that this CD is fantastic
Mr. Seo | 11/11/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Though both concertos are brilliant, number 3 can be argued to be better. Number 2 is "easier" to play (through personal experience) emotianally although both of the concertos are technically demanding. The Third is very profound. It characterizes Rachmaninoff's later works for the piano."
