Taneyev---The Russian Brahms
B.J.S. | Chicago Ill | 05/17/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Sergei Taneyev has been called the Russian Brahms. The truth is---this title is more justified in describing his later chamber compositions (check out the recording "Taneyev--Chamber Music" on D.G. A must-have). The main piece on this disc--Concert Suite for Violin certainly sounds little like Brahms own violin concerto---but it is a fine work nonetheless. And the performance here by the young violinist Pekka Kuustisto is truly first class. But if you want an example of Vlad Ashkenazys powerful, masterful conducting, listen to the Oresteia Overture, also on this disc. This is a mini-masterpiece and along with his 4th symphony Taneyev's finest orchestral work. Taneyev should be better known."
