Synopsis

Product Description
Seamus Blake Quartet
Seamus Blake, tenor saxophone
David Kikoski, piano
Rodney Green, drums
Danton Boller, double-bass To consider that saxplayer Seamus Blake was inclosed in the Downbeat Critics Poll as an "artist deserving of wider recognition", that Pat Metheny described him as "the best tenor player I've heard in a couple of years" (Jazz Times April 1997), that John Scofield hired him for his Quiet Band, calling him "extraordinary, a total saxophonist" or that he placed 1st in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition in February 2002, all that only attests a part of this very interesting musician's course. ..London..born - but ..Vancouver.. raised - saxophonist showcases a fluent phrasing both on tenor and soprano, forged during the best years of jazz in '90s ....New York City....,together with his pals Mark Turner, Kevin Hays, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Larry Grenadier. He also worked as long standing member of the Mingus Big Band -featuring on their last recordings on Dreyfuss - and has just recorded with Victor Lewis Quintet for the third time. He also borrows his sax to some of the most intriguing bands of the modern scene, like Bloom daddies (a funky, alternative grunge jazz), and the very jazz Sangha Quartet..... With his own quartet, Seamus Blake releases his very first live album, Livein Italy, under Jazz Eyes, a double Cd where the refined band - which lines-up David Kikoski on piano, Danton Boller on double-bass and Rodney Greenon drums - plays some powerful Blake's tunes, one by Kikoski, and pieces from Scofield, Ellington and Van Heusen/DeLange, as well as an astonishing jazz version of Debussy's String Quartet in G minor.....

CD Reviews

I'd give this six stars if possible, beautiful live album!

"Well seeing how no one has reviewed this album yet I thought I'd give it a shot & inform the jazz public on a fantastic live album by the Seamus Blake Quartet. I'v had this album now for a few weeks & its been steady in my music rotation. It just a few words it is smoking! Seamus is joined here in Italy by pianist David Kikoski, bassist Danton Boller & drummer Rodney Green. The entire group is in top form especially David Kikoski who takes many stand out solos from greasy shuffle funk to straight ahead post bop. One particular thing I love about Seamus on this album is how he utilizes electronic effects on his tenor like wah wah & echo delay but the effects never threaten to overwhelm the natural sound of the horn, rather they enhance the mood and enforce Seamus's ideas. The live recorded sound of the band is excellent with each instrument given its proper place in the mix with studio like clarity. Personally I prefer the sound of this recording compared to Seamus's previous album on Criss Cross Way out Willy. All of the tunes come from Seamus's previous Way Out Willy & his newest Bellwether albums. I really love all these tunes especially the first two songs from disc 1 The Jupiter Line & Way Out Willy the latter has some great soulful piano comping & soloing from Kikoski & Seamus busts out the auto wah for his funky sax solo. Another standout composition is The Fear of Roaming. I can't say enough good stuff about this killer live set & to top it off it's a double cd so you get plenty of music to enjoy. Also because its live the tunes are extended & given a good shaking down. Excellent album! Highly recommended. Enjoy!"
