Scottish Sarum plainsong and polyphany
M. J. Smith | Seattle, WA USA | 10/18/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Robert Carver is a little known Scotsman 1484/5-after 1568 who wrote church music based on the Sarum chant of Salisbury in the era in which plain song gave way to polyphany. His music has a clarity of voice that retains an appreciation of the importance that the text be understood. At the same time, much of his music has moved into a chordal harmony. Some of the music is reconstructed by Kenneth Elliot; to my ear he has done an admirable job.I'll admit that being familar with Robert Carver will result only in a blank stare on the social circuit. But if you like late medieval-early renaissence music, this is a gem."
