CD Reviews

A tribute...with feeling
M. Bernocchi | Old Windsor, Berkshire United Kingdom | 08/26/2007

"After ten years spent playing with the Master and after five albums with his own band, Scott Holt pays a tribute to his old employer and friend with this CD. 13 songs have been selected (excluding the few seconds "Intro" and "Outro"), songs that probably Scott Holt has played several times on stage with his mentor. The final result is very good, as Scott Holt is able to give to all the songs his own signature avoiding the mistake to simply reproducing the style of Buddy Guy, but filtering them with his feeling, personality and sound. Just for example the classic "Damn Right, I've Got The Blues" became, after Scott's review, a fantastic slow number. From my point of view this is Scott's best album so far, surely the more blues oriented of all. Also his guitar playing finds more space and several songs include extensive solos that were not common in previous works. Scott's guitar playing is brilliant throughout the entire album and he also demonstrates, once again, to be a good singer too. The only down side of this excellent electric blues album is that in a couple of tracks the sound is a bit too heavy, and that makes feel those songs out of contest. Tom Larson on drums and Richard Sanders on bass are the perfect companions for this adventure and they provide a solid and precise base for Scott's guitar pyrotechnic. Best cuts of the bunch the already mentioned "Damn Right..." the opening "First Time I Met The Blues" and the excellent version (or better reinterpretation) of "My Time After A While". Recommended."
Buddy Guy's former sideman honors his mentor

"Scott Holt is one of the most underrated artists on the music scene today. This cd is a fine example of his work missing the mainstream blues playlists. After touring with Buddy Guy for nearly 10 years, the student becomes the teacher with this tribute to his mentor. The premise for this cd was to interpret some of Buddy's music (and some he MADE famous) and place the Holt personality upon them. Trust me: not one passed ball or a strike on this disc! He hits each track out of the park, at record distances!! I hope Scott tours this area again, it has been 10 years since I last saw him perform. If you like blues, you will love this release!"

"Wow! Scott Holt is a hidden treasure that most people have never heard about but should add to their collection of blues guitar players. I really enjoyed the 3 Scott Holt CD's that I just bought from Amazon. I wish I had had these a long time ago!! I can't wait for his next release so I can buy it too!
