Synopsis

Although the guitar was introduced to Hawaii only in the 1830s (the European guitar tradition dates at least to the 1500s), Hawaiian musicians developed two of the instrument's most important playing techniques: the use of the metal slide or steel to fret the strings, and the altered tuning style known as slack key. On In the Saddle, Led Kaapana, one of the current masters of slack key, and Bob Brozman, the king of acoustic steel guitar, join together to play an enchanting collection of old Hawaiian melodies and original compositions. Hawaiian guitar music is one of the most sweetly melodic styles in the world, and Kaapana and Brozman's versions of tunes like "No Ke Ano Ahiahi," which was made famous by Gabby Pahinui, and "Meleanna E," a party favorite that dates back to the 1900s, rank among the most lovely renditions ever recorded. Most of the tracks here are instrumentals, but Kaapana sings a small handful in the traditional falsetto style. In the Saddle is a fine example of two of the world's finest guitarists playing some of the world's prettiest music. --Michael Simmons

CD Reviews

Bob, this is GREAT!

"I first met Bob Brozman, and his steel guitar work, years ago playing in the "Cheap Suit Serenaders". It was there I learned of his expert command of Hawaiian music and "In the Saddle" lives up to his stunning talent. This cd is an absolute joy to listen to."

"I've been to all of the Hawaiian Islands and have become familar with much of the native talent. All the music of the islands are a blessing and their native talent outstanding. But Ledward Kaapana is one of my favorite. I don't hesitate to buy any of his music wherever I can find it while visiting the islands. Of course, in this case it's a bonus, because I get Bob Brozman along with him.

I've attended many concerts in Hawaii listening to most of the best talent that lives there. There are never any disappointments and I love slack key music. This type of music developed by the locals over the years has grown into a unique sound that is never matched any where away from the islands.

I have an enormous collection of music of all sorts, but this sound of the Hawaiian Islands ranks as some of my most favorite, as does the wonderful people of these islands. The sounds are so relaxing and so enjoyable that it's hard to compare it to anything else. You'll just have to sample this unique sound yourself, or better yet to get obsorved in the mood, go to Hawaii and live it, a sound and a feeling that will stay with you a lifetime. Thankyou Ledward for much wonderful music you have provided us.

"I live part-time in Maui and have been researching Hawaiian slack key musicians for over 15 years. Kaapana and Brozman, in my opinion, are in the same league as Gabby Pahinui: classical but interpreted for contemporary times, angelic masculine voices, and guitar wizards."
