From Rossini back to Beaumarchais ...
Michel | Montreal, Quebec | 02/28/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Rossini's 'Il Barbiere di Siviglia' sung in french ... heresy!

Not so sure for the opera is after all based on a famous french

play by Beaumarchais - anyway as it is the translation works very

well - the recitatives are replaced by spoken-dialogues as is the

custom in french opera-comique taken from the play itself. In this

version Rosina is taken by a high soprano and Bartolo by a baritone.

The cast is first-rate - all soloists are accomplished singers and

actors with special kudos to Jean-Christophe Benoit as Bartolo.

Jean-Pierre Marty conducts with verve and the sound is excellent.

A highly stylish and interesting release.
