The finest music for guitar and orchestra NEVER written
John O'Neill | Alpharetta, GA | 03/25/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Here excellent Naxos guitarist Gerald Garcia (check out his "Latin American Guitar Festival" and "Brazilian Portrait" CDs) teams up with conductor/arranger Peter Breiner to produce a highly enjoyable collection of music for guitar and orchestra. Here Breiner takes some of the best known piano works of Debussy and Satie, plus some items from Faure's orchestral output, and presents them in lush original arrangements for guitar and orchestra. The arrangements work best when they are simple. On a few they're a bit over the top, and for that the recording loses one star, but for the most part Breiner provides fine backings for Garcia's beautiful and sensitive playing. Highlights include the two Satie "Gymnopedies", Debussy's "Le Fille Auz Cheveux de lin", "Arabesque", and "Reverie", and Faure's "Pavane" and "Sicilienne": all beautifully played and arranged. An original idea, nicely executed with only one or two questionable moments. Should appeal to fans of classical guitar and French classical music."
