CD Reviews

Much Better that "Jump Back"
Hughbert Jass | 04/28/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Before I do my review, I'm gonna give the song list:

1. Miss You

2. Brown Sugar

3. Undercover the Night

4. Start Me Up

5. Tumbling Dice

6. Hang Fire

7. It's Only Rock'n'Roll (But I Like It)

8. Emotional Rescue

9. Beast of Burden

10. Fool to Cry

11. Waiting On a Friend

12. Angie

13. Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)

This is a great song collection but 1 thing never made sense to me, The tital "Rewind: 1971-1984" implies that it is to accompany "Hot Rocks: 1964-1971". Why didn't they make this a 1972-1981 collection? (face it, "Undercover the Night" isn't worth it) If they removed the song "Brown Sugar", which appears on Hot Rocks and added "She's So Cold", (a classic) and "Happy", it would be much more fullfilling. The shamefull thing about this album is that "jump back: 1971-1993" has seemed to replace it. An album that focuses on better years will always be better than a compilation that tries to spread to lesser years. If you manage to see this in a local music store, buy it while you can, but make sure you pick up "Hot Rocks" to go with it. It'll be much better that 40 licks for a little extra cash."
Better this, than the edited versions

"As someone who really felt burned after purchasing FORTY LICKS and JUMP BACK, both of them being Stones compilations that feature edited versions of some of their best 70s and 80s material, the out-of-print REWIND album still provides me with plenty of, well, satisfaction. Pick it up: the full versions of "Miss You," "Fool To Cry," "Heartbreaker" and "Emotional Rescue" are all here, along with plenty of other gems. Only "Hang Fire" doesn't really hold up, but the rest are near perfect examples of the greatness that is Mick, Keith, Ron, Charlie, 'n' Bill (and of course Mick Taylor, too)."

"I believe this was my first Stones disc, and I cherished it for quite a while, especially when I found out it was out of print. It's all songs you know by heart, but that's why I like it I suppose. When "Forty Licks" was released, this collection really became pointless. However, I still keep it because it has "Waiting On A Friend", and "Forty Licks" does not for some reason. I agree with another who said this should have "She's So Cold". I hear that song on radio more than any other, and it doesn't seem to be anywhere besides the "Emotional Rescue" album. Hmmmm. Anyway, This is a good disc, and together with "Hot Rocks" it could keep you from having to get anything else. It's cheap used."
