CD Reviews

Rockin' Patriots
Joan Ecclesine | No. Hollywood, CA USA | 08/03/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Uncle Sam has never looked better than he does on the cover painting of this compilation CD. With top hat, tatts, gold earring and a goatee, he's got the steady gaze of a veteran rocker. And vintage rock is what you get from "Rockin' Patriots"-an unusual collection of rock `n' roll artists celebrating the old red, white & blue. Thematically the music's all about patriotism, but peppered with protest. All these singers love the USA, but for some it's tough love. I first heard the Rockin'Patriots CD's unique version of "This Land Is Your Land" on the radio. It was so original I felt compelled to order it. Each verse is sung by one of five very different voices which the arranger uses to turn the Woody Guthrie classic into a something new & wonderful. This cut alone is worth the price of the whole CD. Because most any voice can sing "This Land Is Your Land" passably well, why in heck isn't it the American anthem? The version in cut #1 makes the case for a switch. There's a lot of good rock `n' roll in this collection of tunes although many are folk-rock. All are good listening with wise words to consider. Credit goes to the design folks at Rhino for the handsome liner notes."

"I buy everything this pair makes, they are very talented artists, and writers, and they make thoughtful, fun and wonderful sounds. Very worth owning. I have seen them in person several times and they do not disapoint,"
