CD Reviews

Are We Listening?
The Daphne Blue Strat | Chicagoland | 03/09/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've been a fan of The Listening (formerly, obviously, the RRWC) since late 2003; I have all of their albums as RRWC except for Little Star Logistics, and love them all. I was skeptical when I found that my favorite band was going to be changing not only their name but also their style; one live show in October 2005 changed my mind.

The boys are absolutely amazing; incredible songwriters, talented (boy is THAT an understatement) musicians, and, I believe, visionaries.

I won't rate every song on the album; I think it would give the songs away and slant the listener's opinions of them, and I don't want to do that! These songs may not move you in quite the same way they move me...and that's ok. I WILL say that I was disappointed with the inclusion of "Are We Listening?" and"(untitled)" from the 2004 Listening EP...but only because I already owned the EP and wanted two NEW songs.

I pre-ordered the album so I have the version with the bonus disc...if you can get this version somehow, get it! It will be well worth the extra few dollars you'll spend.

When I saw that The Listening LP was ranked #44,000ish yesterday for music sales, I was astounded! The world is beginning to take notice of The Listening; and as a previous reviewer said, one day I will be able to say (not without a sense of awe) that *I* was one of the first to listen."
I can't stop listening to this album

"Words cannot capture how amazing this band is. They take elements of Radiohead, Death Cab, Pink Floyd, and trace elements of Nine Inch Nails (The Factory could rival any of Reznor's ambient, piano driven balads). All these influences are there, and yet this album has a sound that definitely belongs only to The Listening. I was a fan of them as Rock And Roll Worship Circus, but this album I think really solidifies them as the gifted songsmiths and ingenious musicians they are. I caught them live a couple of days ago too, and I am amazed that this band does not have a huge national following by now."
The Best Rock Album In A Long, Long Time

"Once in awhile you come across some music that makes you wonder how the musicians involved ever developed the genius, and you wonder about all the years it must have taken to develop it. My friends, this is the effect that The Listening LP had on me. It knocked me out of my lazy comfort zone and made me say "WOW!". Ambient landscapes fill your ears as guitar solos flood through your speakers and dark, sad melodies twinkle as vocalist Gabriel breathes his raspy vocals into the mic.

Musical influences about throughout the album, ranging from Pink Floyd and other classic acts to more modern stuff like Sigur Ros. Every song on the album could be your favorite, ranging from the rockin' Triple Fascination to the moody drum crashing on The Factory. Lovely Red Lights broods hopelessly into a dark tale of Amsterdam yet somehow redeems itself in the end. The love-lost tale of Be In Your eyes fades into the special retelling of Hosea in C Minor (which really is in C Minor, hah!).

Get the point? This is music that truly deserves its place in our cd player, so much more than pop-rock acts such as The Used or Hawthorne Heights that dominate rock radio. The Listening is one of those few bands that really can call themselves an experience.

And they don't even have a bassist!"
