CD Reviews

A good recording

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Pavel Jegorov's performance is excellent in Scenes from Childhood (and this piece is perhaps a bit more well-known than Carnaval or the Arabasqe), but it is just as good in these other two pieces.

The dynamics in the Carnaval performance are really rewarding, and the story behind it is very interesting as well. The whole work is a sort of tribute to Schumann's illegitamate love interest, Ernestine von Fricken, and so he wrote the letters of her hometown of Asch into the musical themes of this work! He chose these letters because they were both common to her hometown and his own last name. In fact, Schumann called this piece "Fasching, Schwanke auf vier Noten" or "Carnival, Frolic scenes on Four Notes".

In case you were wondering how "ASCH" translates into musical notes, "A" and "C" should be obvious, but "S" translates to E-flat and "H" translates to B-natural in Germanic notation.

Incidentally, Schumann points out these letters in the scoring of this piece in the track titled, "Sphinxes" even though he never intended anyone to actually play them in performance (yet Jegoov does on this recording, check it out). Enjoy!"
