"Ok. This is CD number 4 which gives me the shivers in 2004. I reviewed George Michael's Patience, Yes's 90125 (re-issue) and The Cure's Join The Dots (box-set) which comes close to this kind of music sometimes. The 6 string-bass do... I often wondered if there was any real 'battle' between Simon Gallup and Peter Hook?! Can anyone tell me?!
Little bit surprised to see that I'm the first reviewer here, but ok. let's go;This double-CD set is wonderfully packaged, sleeves by Peter Saville and really interesting lines notes (I really recommend the book Dreams Never End (Claude Flowers) from 1994, there's a good story about Revenge in it). As usual, you hear Hooky at the end of the first CD with some thank you's with a moody piece of music. The tracks have a different line up than on the original One True Passion and I think that's a very good thing because there are some surprises to find.As a life-time fan of Joy Division/New Order/Electronic/Revenge/Monaco AND The Other Two, I felt that this was a great opportunity to get all the Revenge songs remastered, some songs are slightly different from the original One True Passion (June 12, 1990). Another good thing: The sound is really improved here, so there's a lot more to hear for the fans.
You hear the first two songs which are new to the public, then we get the Gun World Porn EP (January 1992) in a different order/remake. Deadbeat has another start and slightly different vocals on it, State Of Shock is a little bit shorter because the last 20 seconds were faded (which is actually a good thing). Little Pig an d Cloud Nine are the same. Then we take a trip back to 1989 with the song Jesus... I Love You (extended version) before we begin to the 'old' One True Passion. After 3 One True Passion-tracks we go to 14K (which was a b-side on the Slave-single from 1990) and then back to 3 One True Passion tracks. Then Amsterdam, which was also a b-side from Slave and then we close the first disc with It's Quiet, which is very nice because One True Passion was closed also with this track. The second CD is called Be Careful What You Wish For and contains a LOT of new tracks which were only available on vinyl at the time or on obscure cassettes/CD magazines. Also we have enough remixes from the One True Passion songs to be satisfied with. The remixes of Deadbeat (Gary Clail Dub) and State Of Shock (U.S. mix) are somewhat disappointing, but the rest is top notch.
I won't tell you much about the second CD, but be prepared for a lot of good stuff from Revenge. Here you also will find the 'rest' of One True Passion; Kiss The Chrome (which was nearly another single at the time) and Fag Hag. Very hard to pick my favoutites, but let's say that I stick with State Of Shock, Big Bang, 7 Reasons, It's Quiet and the two new songs Televive and The Wilding. I need some time to get 'into' the others ... Meanwhile; HAVE SOME FUN WHILE LISTENING! A 'must-have' for ALL JD/NO devotees.

One True Passion - The Upgrade

"I reviewed the original release of One True Passion (OTP) in April 2006 and gave it 3 stars. The original album had nine tracks - most were good, but unfortunately the whole thing suffered because of too much production. (What it needed at the time was less density and more of Peter Hook's basslines.) It was followed in 1992 by the seven track Gun World Porn EP. After that, the Revenge project languished for many years until the release of OTP V2.0 in 2004.



One True Passion V2.0 however, forgives many of the sins of the original Revenge material. First and foremost, we have here not one, but TWO discs of music. We get the original album, the follow-up EP, and then some! There's over 30 songs total, with a running time just over 2.5 hours. All of the original material from OTP and Gun World Porn has been remastered, so the sound is noticeably cleaner. We also have two completely new songs (Televive & The Wilding), alternate versions, remixes, and some short instrumentals. While the original release was nothing to be ashamed of, OTP V2.0 is a vast improvement.



It's obvious that a lot of thought and effort went into putting this new release together. Peter Hook should be given a lot of credit here: he could have slapped the original album and EP together on one disc to cash in, thrown in an old demo as a "bonus", and been done with it. Instead, he went out of his way not only to remaster the existing material, but also to give his fans an entire CD of music that wasn't previously available. His second take on One True Passion puts the material in a muuuuuch better light, and is a definite enhancement to his (already significant) musical legacy. The original got three stars; this one deserves five. Revenge made some great music, and OTP V2.0 is a great value for the price.
