CD Reviews

Still One of the Best
Paul Van de Water | Virginia, USA | 03/09/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This set is a re-release of recordings originally made from 1967 to 1970 on four historic organs: the Hagerbeer-Schnitger-Flentrop at Alkmaar (NL), the Coci-Fritzsche-Dropa at Altenbruch (D), the Schnitger-Flentrop at Zwolle (NL), and the Silberman-Metzler at Arlesheim (CH). Saorgin has many competitors: Harald Vogel (on MD&G), Bine Bryndorf (on DaCapo), Hans Davidsson (on Loft, in progress), Wolfgang Rubsam et al. (on Naxos), Walter Kraft (on Vox), and Ton Koopman (on Challenge, in progress). Nevertheless, this set remains one of the best of Buxtehude's organ works. See reviews of the original release at Buxtehude: Organ Works.

Interestingly, volume 1 of Ton Koopman's new Buxtehude cycle is recorded on the same organ in Altenbruch that Saorgin used to record part of his traversal. The Saorgin recording still sounds great and provides more of the ambience of the venue. On balance, however, Koopman benefits from modern sound and more animated playing.
