CD Reviews

Reefs Silent, yet Powerful Debut
Roger I. Camara Lemarroy | monterrey, nuevo leon Mexico | 04/09/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Replenish is Reef{s debut cd, nonetheless they come out strong and ready to impact the world with their Alternative yet pop-concious rock act.
Replenish is full with soft steady melodies that guide the listener with clean but not sober guitars, warm bass riffs, and a filling percussion set, and Gary Stringer's Black Crowish Voice.
In comparison to the bands following records, this debut comes out well reserved and silent. By its undistorted melodies, and Stringer's reserved voice, seems more that this was a safe release than anything else. In this record you wont hear gary's voice go up and down through various scales, and you wont hear him shout and you wont hear that wreckless scrathy voice from "place your hands" "set the record straight" or "summers in bloom." Instead you get a singer who is not that conscious of his great voice and who is a little afraid to use it.
Replenish distinguishes itself for having great blues influence that is turned into soft rock melodies involving chants that resemble a high tuned chaman dancing around in the beaches of the UK.
Maybe most notable in this cd is "naked," the song that put Reef on the popular list. But my personal favourites are "replenish" which starts out with a beautiful bass, and drums that play along with the music, and then continues with a mystical chant. Also "comfort" a song where the lyrics state that a woman is in need.
The rest of the songs are equally appealing, and very entertaining.
Replenish is a great album, by a great band, even if they decided to stay reserved, and keep a little energy for their following album.
My recomendation is that you hear this album. Maybe in a beach somewhere, close to the sea and a bonfire. It will put you in mood, and you will like what you are hearing. This cd is a good buy."
When the world ends, and somebody looks back @ music...

"they are going to see classical music and blues as really influential... and of course all of the pop culture stuff. they will see hip hop and all that too. heavy metal and rock music won't interest them as much because blues is the original genre there. but, I [...] you not, when they listen to Reef, they will slobber and dance naked. they will esteem humans as the finest race ever because Reef is so damn good. as someone else on this board said, Reef are inspiring in the most powerful way."

"IF YOU HAVE NOT YET LISTENED TO REEF, YOU ARE MISSING OUT! THEIR MUSIC PUTS ME ON A HIGH. GARY'S LYRICS ARE AWESOME, MELLOW IS EPIC. WORDS DON'T DO REEF JUSTICE. GO OUT AND GET IT. YOU WILL WONDER HOW YOU EVER SURVIVED WITHOUT IT."
