In All That Jazz, the 1979 film starring Roy Scheider as an artistic director who slowly destroys his own life through womanizing, pill popping, and breaking hearts, the soundtrack is incorporated into the plot rather than merely serving as background music. When removed from their context, the jazzy, Broadway-esque tracks on this album are fun and even whimsical, but when Ben Vereen sings the eulogy for Scheider's character (fittingly, imaginary showgirls perform in a cabaret as he dies), the tone changes to one of beautifully satirical, unsympathetic tragedy. --Beth Bessmer
