Synopsis

Album Description
2008 four CD set. Rafael Kubel¡k is considered one of the greatest conductors of the second half of the 20th century. His musical portrait encompasses the acclaimed recordings made in 1946 and 1954 with first-class orchestras like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Kubel¡k was respected and criticized to the same degree: the works he performed were too modern for their day, during the 1950s he frequently used black performers for the solo parts and often imparted his political views extremely direct and undisguised: he turned down offers made by Czech communists to conduct in Prague, although he was Czech by birth. He first returned to the country, to Prague, in 1990 to conduct Smetana's Czech national opus M  Vlast (My Fatherland), in celebration of the political changes. Documents.
