CD Reviews

The Spanish Schumann
Jeffery A. Triggs | New Jersey | 02/13/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This was my first experience of Granados's music other than for the piano alone. I always thought that he captured the deeply whimsical spirit of Schumann better than any later composer (consider, for instance, the Papillons-like Danzas Poeticas), and the Piano Quintet reinforces this notion. It is definitely a Schumannesque work, with romantically energetic outer movements and an especially enchanting Allegretto quasi Andantino middle movement. The disc is filled out with a number of shorter pieces for piano and strings, including a chamber version of the well-known Danza Espanola No 10 and a meditation on a Bach choral. This is music for a specialized taste, perhaps, but it has its special charm and will not lead to buyer's remorse."
