Synopsis

Album Description
Future Past Tense is a CD collection documenting the best remixes by Q-Burns Abstract Message. Stretching back from 1998's remix of Rabbit In The Moon's "Floor.i.da" to recent re-workings for Fila Brazilia and Lovesky these tracks give an entertaining overview of the variety and ingenuity, of Michael "Q-Burns" Donaldson's work. A re-rub of Beef Wellington's "Dedication" sounds like a future James Brown while the following mix of Mazi & Colette's "Do You Want Me" is pure squelchy funk house joy. This diversity is present throughout the length of the disc, but the whole flows together linked by the playfulness and uniqueness of Q-Burns' production. Almost all of the tracks on Future Past Tense have been previously only available on limited vinyl releases and a few are even rarer. Before now, the Latin-flavored remix of Tetris' "Two Hours" could only be found on the Russian release of their full album. The ultra-deep house mix of Rabbit In The Moon's "Floor.i.da" is a completely different version than the one that appeared on the Hallucination 12" single. And the gorgeous Naked Music-like rework of Neon Heights' "Hometown Blue" is completely exclusive to this release. Standing alone as a Q-Burns Abstract Message album or a cohesive collection of brilliant artists remixed, Future Past Tense is undeniably a fascinating listen that fans of electronic dance music everywhere will enjoy. Future Past Tense also gives a glimpse into the developing sound of one of the USA's most popular and eclectic electronic dance producers and DJs.

Skillful, eclectic stuff

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Q-Burns Abstract Message has been a mover and shaker in American electronic music for over 10 years. His DJ sets are known for their diversity and high funk factor, and his production reflects a similar ethic. "Future Past Tense" is a collection of his remixes for other artists, and while the artists and remixes vary wildly, high quality runs throughout. From the Compost-approved organic vibes of "Dedication" to the Prince-on-Mars funk of "We Build Arks," the remixes showcase a strong sense of melody, groove, and musical depth. The throwaway vocal house of "Do You Want Me" is the only clunker; otherwise, each remix is a mini-journey full of invention and playfulness."
