CD Reviews

Diamond in the rough
E. Snyder | Oregon USA | 05/25/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Only sharp-eyed browsers will have noticed that this is a disc of piano music by Vladimir Sofronitsky, and that's too bad because this is a beautifully played recording of some of the staples of the Russian repertoire. From the opening notes of the famous Prelude No. 2 in C sharp minor through the rest of the Rachmaninov and Scriabin presented here, Sofronitsky demonstrates an awareness of this music that few have. The Scriabin, which in the wrong hands can turn to mush, is delivered clearly with a sense of design and phrasing that makes these pieces really come to life. These recordings were made between 1946-1951 for Moscow Radio.Sound is quite good overall, which makes this an easy recommendation."
