Synopsis

Album Description
Originally recorded and released in 1978, Brüder des Schattens ? Söhne des Lichts is the previously unreleased "demo" version of the Nosferatu soundtrack, coupled with the bonus track Sing, For Song Drives Away The Wolves. Sing? is a new version of the original song from the Werner Herzog film Herz aus Glas and has been revised and re-arranged by Guido Hieronymus with powerful guitars and a full sound which gives the track a special new touch. Popol Vuh was founded by mastermind Florian Fricke in Munich in 1970 and are known as pioneers of electronic music as well as the predecessors of the 90's ambient and trance genre. Florian Fricke was one of the first German musicians who worked with a MOOG III, an instrument which created a very new and special sound which was profiled on Affenstunde. This album quickly became a milestone and practically created a whole new genre. The name and the book Popol Vuh stems from Incan mythology and is the memory of the evolution of humanity. Florian Fricke doesn't like to catagorize his music; "Music is a form of law for me." He died on December 29, 2001 in Munich. Kraut Rock at the highest level made by, and for music fans ! All Popol Vuh re-releases are manufactured as high quality collector's series with stickers indicating the bonus tracks. The Digipak spines have a design and when all are put together they form one big picture.

CD Reviews

Atmospheric masterpiece
Pieter | Johannesburg | 07/22/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In its original 1978 release, this was the soundtrack to the movie Nosferatu. This is the demo version of that album with one bonus track. Piano, guitars, sitar, oboe, tamboura and a church choir create the most beautiful music on this remarkable work. Höre, Der Du Wagst starts with the gentle sounds of sitar and piano for a slow brooding buildup, then the pace picks up with Das Schloss des Irtums where the guitars gain prominence and likewise on Die Umkehr. The real masterpiece is the title track Brüder des Schattens, Söhne des Lichts with its hypnotic, repetitive melody line and its gorgeous sitar, piano and guitar. This magnificent piece is more classical than popular music and would not be out of place on a Steve Reich album in its minimalist textures. There is also a spiritual quality about it that evokes feelings of loss, sorrow and redemption. Brüder des Schattens is an atmospheric masterpiece of German electronic music and has stood the test of time very well."
