CD Reviews

A fun cd with Doc Anello & His Quartet
Dr. Burger | Rowland Heights, CA | 11/21/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Many of us swing dancers know Doc Anello from Saturday night at Disnayland's famous Carnation Plaza(Jump, Jive & Boogie Party). He plays there twice a month with his big band The Swing Machine, which plays standards that sound very late 50's early 60's Las Vegas Lounge. Nelson Riddle or Billy May(but not authentic 40's swing) come to mind when you listen to Doc & The Swing Machine. While that band is predictable, with smooth tempos, although occasionally they can play with some energy. This cd sheds a different light on Anello, with just his quartet. Anello is a kind adorable little man, with a big smile, and personality(he's actually a pretty funny guy). His sax playing is ok, and his vocals are reminiscent of some 1950's pop singers such as Tony Bennett. Although everyone and thier uncle have already covered these typical Vegas standards(I've Got You Under My Skin, That Old Black Magic, Teach Me Tonight), Anello's many adoring fans(the Disneyland 45+ swing dancing crowd, though I'm only 25) will enjoy this fun and interesting set. The Quartet is swinging and jazzy(all the sidemen are exellent players), and Anello's vocals are fine, and his sax playing is harmless enough to enjoy. This cd is a must have for Anello fans, and those who frequent Disneyland for swing dancing and want to hear Anello in a different setting than they are used to hearing him. Bottom line: A fine & fun swing/jazz/jump/lounge set with plenty of Anello vocals, a cd worth acquiring for his many fans."
